Overview
This project is part of a five-video instructional series designed to train employees on how to accurately enter safety incidents into the IBM Maximo Application Suite system. The target audience included linemen and field employees who needed a clear, practical walkthrough of the incident reporting process within their day-to-day workflow.
For this portfolio example, I selected one video from the series to demonstrate my instructional design and eLearning development process. Due to the sensitive nature of the content, Critical Energy/Electric Infrastructure Information (CEII) and other confidential company information have been redacted.
The goal of the training was to:
Simplify a complex reporting process
Improve accuracy and consistency when entering safety incidents
Provide accessible, step-by-step guidance for employees with varying levels of technical experience
Support compliance and internal safety documentation procedures
The final deliverable was developed as a concise software training video focused on clarity, usability, and real-world application.
Tools Used
My Role
I served as the instructional designer and eLearning developer for this project. My responsibilities included:
Collaborating with SMEs and stakeholders
Organizing and translating technical procedures into learner-friendly instruction
Designing the visual learning experience
Developing the training video and supporting visuals
Editing screen recordings and audio
Reviewing and revising content based on stakeholder feedback
Publishing and preparing the project for stakeholder review in Review 360
Process
SME Collaboration & Content Gathering
I collaborated closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) and stakeholders through a dedicated Microsoft Teams channel to streamline communication, gather feedback, and manage project updates throughout development.
To capture an authentic workflow, SMEs recorded themselves completing a real incident entry within Maximo. These recordings served as the foundational reference material for:
Understanding the exact reporting process
Identifying critical steps and decision points
Capturing realistic user workflows
Ensuring technical accuracy
This approach helped bridge the gap between technical expertise and learner comprehension while reducing ambiguity during development.
Instructional Design Strategy
Because the audience included both linemen and everyday employees with varying levels of system familiarity, I designed the training to prioritize:
Clear navigation
Minimal cognitive overload
Practical, task-based instruction
Step-by-step demonstrations
Visual reinforcement of key actions
The learning experience focused on procedural learning, allowing users to follow along with the workflow in a logical and approachable format.
I also structured the content to support microlearning principles by keeping the video concise and focused on a single process within the larger training series.
Content Development
Using PowerPoint, I created visual assets and slide layouts to support the instructional flow and emphasize important actions within the system.
I then used Camtasia to:
Edit screen recordings
Trim and sequence workflow demonstrations
Add zoom effects and callouts
Enhance visual clarity
Improve pacing and learner focus
Finally, I developed and assembled the interactive learning experience in Articulate Storyline 360.
Review & Iteration
Throughout the project, I gathered feedback from SMEs and stakeholders to verify:
Technical accuracy
Process alignment
Clarity of instruction
Usability for the intended audience
Revisions were incorporated iteratively to ensure the final product accurately reflected the real-world reporting process while remaining accessible and easy to follow.
Key Design Considerations
Simplified technical processes into learner-friendly instruction
Designed for employees with varied technical proficiency
Maintained a clean and distraction-free visual experience
Focused on real-world workflow application
Protected sensitive company information through content redaction
Structured content for quick reference and on-the-job support
Deliverable
The final deliverable was a software training video published for stakeholder review through Review 360.
This sample represents one module within a broader five-video training series focused on safety incident reporting procedures in Maximo.
